SAMPLE RP
Two brothers boarded an airplane and, despite the ticket reading Chicago, their real destination was unknown.
There are some names in the professional wrestling industry that commanded respect like Flair, Rhodes, and Orton. Then there were others that were more notorious for other reasons - like Von Erich. Marshall and Ross Von Erich were born and raised by the world famous “Golden Warrior” Kevin Von Erich who, along with his brothers, were the premier names of professional wrestling in Texas back in the territory days. Ross would love it if it were that simple. He’d loved to be able to wear his name with the same kind of pride that Charlotte, Cody, and Randy did. Instead his family didn’t get a happy ending… they got multiple suicides and tragedies.
He didn’t like thinking about it. Instead he put his headphones on, tilted his head back, and tried to drift off to sleep. Marshall was sitting beside him, fidgeting about with some app on his phone. He had always been the most excitable of the two. Ross was patient enough with him but it wore thin at times.
Marshall embraced the legacy… loved it really. Maybe it was due to the fact that he was the baby brother but he was more of an optimist than Ross was. He was always so captivated when their dad sat them around the campfire and told them stories about how he and his brothers faced down the Freebirds, the Great Kabuki, and Ric Flair… how all of the Dallas Sportatorium got to their feet and cheered for them as they made their way to the ring. His dad wasn’t just his dad… he was a hero… one of the famous Von Erich Family… and now he was too. He trained himself to wrestle bare-footed like his dad, he wore the cowboy hat to the ring like his uncle David, and he ate, slept, and lived the Von Erich name. For Marshall, wrestling was about taking an opportunity to revitalize a name that, in his mind, should mean just as much as the Ric Flair’s in the world.
Ross saw things differently. Neither had known their uncles growing up, yes, but both took something different from that. While Marshall sat back and saw heroes, Ross saw young men who were pushed too hard by their father. The stories their father told made him feel sad, if anything. The great Kevin Von Erich looked tired. Exhausted by the demons and ghosts of his brothers who haunted his sleep, worn down from the stress of carrying the family name alone for so long, and heavy from the years of pity that people showed him once they realized who he was. The Golden Warrior was tarnished. Ross knew because he’d also seen that pity in the eyes of promoters from Texas to Israel to Japan and then back to Tijuana. The Von Erich name wasn’t some honor like his brother saw… it was an albatross around his neck.
So he decided to cut himself from stone. While his brother was learning moonsaults, head scissors, and heart punches, Ross turned his focus to Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and submissions. He didn’t want to be a throwback to greater days of the 1980s - a decade that he had barely been born into. He wanted to be his own man, wrestle his own style, and take back the Von Erich name in a way that was wholly unique and wholly his own. He’d rather fail on his own two feet than just be another wrestler trying to cash in on his family name.
Marshall Von Erich: What’re you thinking about?
Marshall had caught him inside his own head again. It happened. He was more introverted than his brother. Marshall could walk into a room with that big, dumb country boy smile and be the life of the party. He preferred to hang around the edges and keep to himself. People and him? Well, he just preferred to be a loner. Even in the middle of a packed arena with thousands of people… he felt more alone than he did if it was just him in an empty hotel room. He turned the volume up on his Spotify and stared straight forward.
Ross Von Erich: Nothing.
Marshall Von Erich: No, you’re thinking about something. Your forehead is doing that thing where your vein pops out. You’re usually stressed out about something.
Somehow his brother was talking louder than the Type O Negative song he was listening to. He whipped his headphones off and glared at his brother. It was an early morning flight and they were one of just a handful of people on their way to Chicago. So, if he decided to murder his brother on the flight, there wouldn’t be that many witnesses.
Ross Von Erich: I told you it’s nothing.
Marshall Von Erich: Sure. Sounds good, man. No skin off my nose. I’m going to sit here, listen to Orville Peck, take a nap, and you can stew in your bad mood for the next however many hours this flight is for.
Marshall smirked at him and tipped his cowboy hat forward, covering the top of his face. Good. He could get back to listening to his music, zoning out for a bit, and trying not to think about the phone call he had received earlier that morning from yet ANOTHER documentarian who wanted to talk to him about his dead uncles. Bunch of vultures. They always started out each call with some sort of half-hearted apology that didn’t mean a single goddamn thing. He noticed he was getting mad again and flipped his brother’s cowboy hat up away from his face in frustration.
Ross Von Erich: I really hate when you do that.
Marshall Von Erich: Nah, you love it because if I didn’t do it you’d internalize your bullshit and be miserable all the time.
His brother laughed to himself and repositioned his cowboy hat. He really didn’t want to talk about it, but he also knew that Marshall was right. If he didn’t say something… ANYTHING… about it, it would eat him alive all day. Then he’d get in the ring, try to take his anger out on someone else, and then make dumb mistakes that would cost them. Marshall didn’t mention that because he was polite but Ross knew that’s what he meant. He sighed and stared down at the floor of the plane.
Ross Von Erich: Dad told me those people from that TV show was by the house.
Marshall Von Erich: Cool. They’re supposed to call me later this week.
Ross Von Erich: It bothers me that you’re both so cool with this.
Marshall Von Erich: Why wouldn’t I be? We get to be on TV again! That never gets old.
Marshall laughed and patted Ross on the knee playfully. If he wasn’t his brother, Ross would snap his fingers before putting him in a key lock on the plane. He didn’t like people touching him like that, especially if he was just about to snap at them again. It just amazed him how his brother and his father never seemed to notice or care that so many people were actively trying to exploit their family. Were they just willfully ignorant?
Ross Von Erich: Never gets old? Marshall, I wish it would get old. Aren’t you tired of it? All the questions? All the times Dad has to talk about Kerry and David? Don’t you see that it’s killing him?
Marshall Von Erich: Ross, I don’t know what you’re looking at but it’s not killing Dad. Sure, it’s not something to be proud of… but it’s our history, man. We can’t change that. I don’t love the fact that our uncles were some of the greatest wrestlers to ever come out of Texas and we never got to meet them… but I accept that it happened.
For a moment, the playful veneer of the baby Von Erich brother fell away. Marshall’s smile melted away and he seemed to age five years in that moment. He recognized the expression because it was one he saw in the mirror most days. Marshall, apparently, was just better at hiding it than him.
Marshall Von Erich: I know what you mean, though. It feels like we’re carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders every time we step into the ring. Dad knew that was going to happen, though. It’s why he got us trained by Harley Race and why he sent us to Japan to train with NOAH. He knew that you and me were going to have an uphill climb if we were ever going to make it in this business and he wanted us to be prepared for it. So… yeah. It sucks that it’s the elephant in the room… but it’s our elephant. We can either let it crush us or we can move on and make the best of it.
Ross Von Erich: I really hate how you sometimes make all the sense in the world and others you’re a total idiot.
Marshall laughed and shrugged his shoulders. Just like that, a flip of a switch, and he was the playful, foolished younger brother. It was surprisingly noble and, honestly, made him jealous. He was just being a big bitch about everything whereas his brother was just living with it.
Marshall Von Erich: Nah, you’re just jealous that I’m the prettier, younger brother.
Ross Von Erich: Alright, shut up and take your nap.
Marshall tipped his cowboy hat over his eyes again and leaned back in his seat.
Marshall Von Erich: Fair enough. Sweet dreams, bro.
Ross Von Erich: Yeah, yeah… sweet dreams.
In a few moments the plane was in the air and his brother was fast asleep. Ross sat alone with his thoughts once again and a new perspective on a situation he had been dealing with all his life.
His last thoughts before he fell asleep himself were his brother’s… “We can either let it crush us or we can move on and make the best of it.”
