Matt Sydal sits in a confessional interview setting. His jet black hair is in a man bun with the sides shaven off, he has the lines of age on his forehead as he is 38 years old. His midwestern Missourian accent comes out when he gets more excited
The Visionary Matt " Reborn" Sydal:
My career has formed through circumstance, right place, and right time. I have to remember to give myself credit that I worked hard and earned a lot of what I got . a fair amount was circumstance. When I went to work in IWA Midsouth in 2003 , 3 years into my career it was where the generation of everyone you see in AEW, the indie stars from ROH in WWE now, we all started there. I met CM Punk, Colt Cabana, Austin Aries when I was 20 years old ,. I went from going from 17 years old driving an hour away from my parent’s house to training and starting out in a dangerous area of Missouri, Ferguson to 20 years old and traveling to 4 hours to Louisville Kentucky , I’d even go after that drive 2 hours and half to Nashville to get my ass kicked by Abyss and Eddie Kingston in TNA. I was on one of the first TNA PPV’s when all they had were pay-per-views. Around 2004 there were 2 new promotions around for a couple years Ring of Honor and Chikara both in Philly. I was a part of the roster who went to Ring of Honor after I won IWA Midsouth’s tournament The Ted Peddy Invitational. I beat Seth Rollins, El Generico, Kevin Owens.
I began wrestling internationally around that time, I went to Japan, that’s where I got my black belt in pro wrestling to put it perfectly. I was the first foreigner and American to win the cruiserweight championship tournament , Back in ROH I became tag champs with Christopher Daniel’s , busted my ass against Cesaro and Kassius Ohno, Austin Aries and Roderick Strong. I was living the dream in Japan, I got to team with and against Jushin Thunder Liger, innovator of the shooting star press, a hero of mine. I could have stayed in Japan but I got this call for this new wrestling program on television, on Mtv called Wrestling Society X. Seth Rollins, X Pac , Jack Evans and myself they got great people but the network didn’t really want wrestling. I got television exposure but The Miz and Melina stole my moves I innovated .
I had a try out for WWE, Johnny Ace said I was great but they weren’t hiring guys my size but Nova/ Simon Dean was working in talent relations and I met him 9 years prior in my first promotion at 17, setting up the ring and he remembered me.
Got my contract pushed through , they sent me to Kentucky for OVW . There was CM Punk there but for the most part it was really tough because it was these body builders and models who didn’t know anything. I was a young veteran. My first day they told us we would be spokes on the wheels for these “ superstar” types. I thought instantly “ fuck that” and three months later I was OVW world heavyweight champion. They split from OVW and we went to Florida to FCW, it was tough having to learn to wrestle, I had been doing it professionally for like 7 years by then. My first opportunity I got working with WWE was actually training Floyd Mayweather for his Wrestlemania match with Big Show.
A few months later this wrestler , a guy who got liposuction to get abs called me and asked if I could get him a dark match. I got really heated, I was there for months and I didn’t even get a try out match. I saw that WWE was going to be in my home state of Missouri and I was going there for my brother’s graduation so I called Johnny Ace told them I was available, he told me not to comd but I did anyway and they gave me a match against Jamie Noble. I faced Jamie Noble years ago and I impressed them enough , the next night I debuted on ECW against Shelton Benjamin. He was feuding with Kofi Kingston and that’s how we met, I lost by count out when Shelton powerbombed me into Kofi who was on commentary.
I literally called myself up to the main roster, it was the wild west back then, you don’t have that now with NXT. It took me 4 months to get my shot at the ECW Championship at Cyber Sunday, fans choose me over Finlay and Mark Henry by a lot to take on one of my idols Matt Hardy, I lasted 11 minutes. He was the first person to evade my shooting star press by then . It was insanely awesome that Matt Hardy helped me up and raised my arm after the match.
That’s the one thing that I succeeded at really, is my reputation. To not only earn the respect of childhood heroes like Rey Mysterio, Ricky Steamboat, Dean Malenko, Jushin Liger, X Pac, Matt Hardy but to be friends with them. Even enemies have been honest enough to give me recognition such as Chris Jericho who I had beaten clean on pay-per-view in 2010.
John Cena, Jim Ross even Jim Cornette who hates all my colleagues and friends , listen to him he constantly gives me the credit I deserve. It may seem from the outside looking in “ wow he’s confident, becoming world champ in OVW in 3 months , calling myself up to the main roster
I’ve also dealt my whole career with confidence issues, I was overly humble it was false humility. False humility is when you say “ I’m top 10” when that’s a lie and you believe you are the best. Plus I was presented in a way that was not genuine to myself. I didn’t know myself back then at 25, how could you expect Vince McMahon to. I have always been an oxymoron of a person.
I was presented as clean cut while I was this mix of an educated athlete a girl could bring home to her family, impress her parents while I was also a pot-smoking swinger. My parents are teachers, I was a great student and I had lots of energy so I was athletic too. Using my Bar Mitzvah money I bought a trampoline and Ken Shamrock’s book which had tips on how to train to be a Japanese wrestler. I did taekwondo when I was younger and I began backyard wrestling with my brothers and friends. Freshman year of high school, I get recruited to the wrestling team I became freshman wrestler of the year. My first day at practice, a kid picked me up and presented me, I was the smallest in the school, I took him down with a hurricanrana. I got in trouble because “ this isn’t pro wrestling”, nah dude EVERYTHING is PRO WRESTLING.
I had a couple professional mistakes which I was very lucky never ruined my reputation but the true reason I was let go from WWE was my foot injury. I was on my second suspension , it was my 29th birthday I got this motorcycle pff.. it was a scooter , got in a wreck and broke my foot permantely in several places. Wrestlemania was a month away, I never did this for money, my goal was never to be famous or wealthy but WWE was on my side for my comeback for Wrsetlemania, a big pay day. They allowed me to heal and we parted very cordial. That weekend I went to Peru to the Peruvian jungle to a spiritual retreat, became reborn legally through this plant medicine given to me through a guru. I knew their was a risk, the side effect of this stuff is it makes you realize your true destiny, MMA fighters take it and realize they are actually pacifists. This had the opposite effect it increased my love for wrestling by 10-fold. In WWE it’s no secret they pummel and juice that love for the business out of you,
This whole Third Eye philosophy is a mix of studying Ram Dass, Timothy Leary, Carl Sagan, Bruce Lee and Alan Watts. It’s not religious, religion is about customs, a god in charge . I’m Jewish heritage wise. You can’t question things in religion with philosophy you can, as Alan Watts said “ Unlearn, everday”.
These aren’t just catch phrases, all due respect to John Cena this isn’t hustle, loyalty and respect. Think for yourself and question everything because if you don’t have a plan, you’ll just become a part of someone else’s’. Turn on, Tune in and Take off.
Come see what I’m saying, find me if you wanna get found!”
